The island is duty free and offers everything from our local markets to designer shopping malls. You may pass a dancing troupe who will show you the traditional old time dances. Locals will be happy to share their stories and have told many an interesting tale to visitors from all over the world.
This exciting Caribbean destination is fully equipped to provide the vacation of a lifetime. Sint Maarten is located 150 miles southeast of Puerto Rico. The Island is just three hours from New York and two hours forty-five minutes from Miami. For visitors from the North a Four-hour flight from Toronto will land you right in paradise.
The island is 37 square miles in its entirety. It was
first occupied by the Arawaks and was discovered by Christopher Columbus on behalf of Spain in 1493. Columbus first sighted the Island on November 11th, the holy day of St. Martin of Tours, and so the Island
was named after him. For the next 150 years the Island was passed between Holland, England, France and Spain. The old stone forts that still stand guard over the Islands many inlets are proof of the island’s turbulent past. In 1648 St. Maarten was peacefully divided between Holland and France, and today is the smallest landmass in the world to be shared by two sovereign nations.
